I couldn’t resist joining this blog tour – Regency romance with a traitorous heroine and spy-catcher hero? This is one of the most exciting romances I’ve read!
Book: The Uncompromising Lord Flint by Virginia Heath
Read before: No
Ownership: Kindle copy sent for fair review. All opinions my own.
Imprisoned by her past – Set free by her enemy!
Charged with high treason, Lady Jessamine Fane is under the watchful eye of icily calm Lord Peter Flint. It’s a task this spy won’t be swayed from, no matter how alluring his prisoner! Only it’s not long before Flint realises that tenacious Jess hides a lifetime of pain. With so much at stake, can he afford to take a chance on their powerful attraction?
This is such a fun book, and really unusual among the historical romances I’ve read. It opens with our heroine, Jess, imprisoned in a cell on a ship travelling from France to England, throwing stale bread at her captor, the inscrutable Lord Flint. It’s a great opening, and is instantly more attention-grabbing than a ballroom scene! It really helps set the scene for Jess’s fiery spirit, and the sparks that are going to fly between the two leads.
Flint himself is an interesting character – I really liked that he’d grown up in a family full of girls, so was having none of Jess’s attempts to manipulate him with her femininity. The two of them are really well set up for an opposites-attract scenario. I loved watching them slowly reveal bits of themselves that showed they really weren’t that different after all. Both of them have a surprising amount of vulnerability that they’ve had to hide to get on with their jobs, and it’s so lovely to see characters like this warm up to one another.
There’s a lot more action in this book than you would normally expect from the genre, and this really kept me flipping the pages. Jess’s escape attempts are really thrilling, especially when she is so close to success, and the book culminates with a battle scene! There’s plenty of time for sweet moments, too, so those looking for something romantic won’t be disappointed. I had a lot of fun with this one – four out of five stars!
About the Author:
When Virginia Heath was a little girl it took her ages to fall asleep, so she made up stories in her head to help pass the time while she was staring at the ceiling. As she got older, the stories became more complicated, sometimes taking weeks to get to the happy ending. Then one day, she decided to embrace the insomnia and start writing them down. Despite that, it still takes her forever to fall asleep.

This is a great review! I’m so happy you got to participate in a blog tour — still crossing my fingers to have a chance to do it! While I don’t pick these books up usually, the blurb sounds very interesting and your review does it justice! 💜
