Kitten Corner: Funny Picture Books!

This time on Kitten Corner I wanted to take a look at a few of the funniest new picture books we’ve been reading recently! If you’re after zany situations and humour-filled illustration, then read on for some of my favourites from the last couple of weeks.

As always with these posts, any books I received for review will be marked with a *, but the fact they were sent to me doesn’t affect my opinions!

Don’t Mess with Duck! by Becky Davies and Emma Levey*

Published 4th March 2021 by Little Tiger

Duck just wants some peace and quiet, but every pond he tries is filled with irritating neighbours! He’ll have to learn to compromise and tolerate others if he wants to settle down somewhere… The story is good fun, with a lovely moral about making friends and not demanding the impossible. The art is hilarious, as Duck tries pond after pond to find his sanctuary – I particularly loved seeing him bothered by macaques in the hot spring! I feel like this would be great for fans of Oi Frog! and its sequels – it’s not a rhyming book, but the combination of grumpiness, humour, and rules just gives me a similar vibe. It’s a lot of fun!

Never Mess With a Pirate Princess by Holly Ryan and Siån Roberts*

Published 4th March 2021 by Little Tiger

Continuing with the theme of people you shouldn’t mess with, this book follows plucky princess Prudence as she heads off on a quest to rescue her precious teddy bear from pirates! This is a high-energy rhyming book, full of visual laughs (the terrified peacock is a very nice touch!) and a great underlying theme of girl power. I loved that Prue, told by a snooty knight that she couldn’t possibly help rescue Ted, decided to take matters into her own hands and ends up besting not only the pirates, but the knight too – it’s not an enormously original plot, but it’s told with great verve and fun here, and it’s one I won’t mind reading over and over again.

Doctorsaurus by Emi-Lou May and Leire Martin*

Published 4th March 2021 by Little Tiger

The idea of a dinosaur doctor is a very fun and original one, and I love that the quietly competent Doctorsaurus is a girl. It’s very entertaining to see all the different ailments the dinosaurs have, though be warned a lot of the humour rests on poo jokes! Still, it will have kids roaring with laughter at the ridiculousness of it, so it’s definitely a winner. The art really suits its cheerful style, being bright and bold, and I particularly like the endpapers, which have scribbly versions of all the characters. Definitely one for dinosaur and doctor fans.

I Am Bat by Morag Hood

Published 6th September 2018 by Pan Macmillan

This is one of my favourite picture books out of our whole collection! Grumpy Bat and his love for cherries just make me smile so much – I don’t know if it’s the stark, but expressive, illustrations, or the terse text, but I always get really into character reading this one and it’s a real joy! It’s perfect for introducing the concept of sharing, but apart from that, it’s just a really funny book.

I’d love recommendations for other funny picture books to get hold of – let me know your favourites!
