It’s time to pick a new challenge TBR, and after a month of mostly romance reading, I’m ready to tackle some fantasy and sci fi! This month’s theme is ‘A is for August’, by which I mean I’ve chosen twelve books from the TBR with titles that start with A. Let’s see what’s on the list!

A Darkness at the Door – Intisar Khanani
I’ve been waiting for this book on tenterhooks for about two years – it’s the second part of a duology, and I finished book one in the middle of the night, sleep-deprived from having a newborn, absolutely shocked by the cliffhanger ending. I cannot WAIT to see how Rae’s story continues!
An Accident of Stars – Foz Meadows
Earlier this year I read and adored A Strange and Stubborn Endurance by Foz Meadows, so I’m really excited to read this reissue of their earlier book, An Accident of Stars. I was hoping to get to this for the Fantasy Hive’s Trans and Nonbinary SFF Month, but June got away from me so I’m prioritising it now.
A Single Thread of Moonlight – Laura Wood
If this looks familiar, it’s because it was in my December 2021 TBR, but I didn’t get to it! I want to try again this month, because this looks so sweet.

Among the Beasts and Briars – Ashley Poston
Three titles that start with ‘among’! I don’t know much about this YA fantasy other than that I’ve enjoyed Ashley Poston’s books in the past, and the embroidered cover is amazing.
Among Thieves – MJ Kuhn
Fantasy heists are always a good idea, so I’m surprised this one managed to slip so far down my TBR for months. I’m hoping this will be fast-paced and fun.
Among Others – Jo Walton
From what I’ve heard I think this is quite a quiet, slow book, a little more on the literary side of fantasy. I’ve only read one other book from Jo Walton, Tooth and Claw, and I think it’ll be pretty different!

A Bitter Drink – Azalea Forrest
I’ve been meaning to get to this indie fantasy for ages but just haven’t been in the mood for longer ebooks for a while. But court politics and a bi hero sounds very much like my cup of tea.
Adrift in Starlight – Mindi Briar
A little bit of sci-fi to shake things up… I’ve actually already read the first few chapters of this and I’m enjoying it so far – it’s an interesting world!
A Storm of Sisters – Michelle Harrison
This is the fourth book in the adventures of the Widdershins sisters, which I love! It’s the only middle grade on this list, so it’ll be nice to have something a little shorter to break up the others with.

A Cathedral of Myth and Bone – Kat Howard
I’ve read a couple of the short stories in this collection and they were fab, so I really want to get to the rest as well!
All the Seas of the World – Guy Gavriel Kay
Guy Gavriel Kay is a wonderful author, but his books require a lot of focus and it can be tricky to find exactly the right time when I’m in the mood for them – hopefully that will happen at some point this month!
An Alchemy of Masques and Mirrors – Curtis Craddock
This is a more recent addition to the TBR after a rec from a friend – I hear it has great court intrigue in an interesting steampunkish world. I’m just hoping the zombies aren’t too much!
As usual, I’ll check back in on the 15th, and at the end of the month. Wish me luck – and I’d love to see your TBR posts if you have them!
