Dystopia tends to be the domain of YA fiction, so I was really interested to see how it would work for middle grade readers in The Middler… And the answer is, brilliantly!
I don’t remember exactly when this book hit my radar, but I knew from the minute I heard the title that it was going to be my kind of thing!
I’ve had a slump when it comes to high-tech, space-shippy sci-fi for a few… years. But between Elizabeth Bear’s Ancestral Night and this book, I think I’m a reborn spaceship lover??
From the moment the email about this book dropped into my inbox, I could see it was going to be exactly the kind of fun, energetic kids book I love, with the kind of heroine I can’t resist!

When I became friends with Amber Elby on Twitter, it was clear that we had loads in common, so I jumped at the chance to review her witchy, Shakespeare-inspired middle grade book, Cauldron’s Bubble. It’s just my cup of tea!
How could I resist a middle grade tale about dragons and libraries? Well, I couldn’t. This book is just perfect, as if it was written for me, and a whole dragon’s hoard of young bookworms are going to adore it!
I was so excited when I saw Caroline Lawrence was writing a new book, because the Roman Mysteries series was one of my favourites as a kid. Really, they led me to get into Lindsey Davis’ Falco mysteries as a teen, and between the two, they’re responsible for my entire Classics degree. So when I heard about The Time Travel Diaries, I instantly knew I had to read this one!
