This is a review I’ve been meaning to write since I turned the last page of this fun piratical YA fantasy, but I’ve let myself get a little behind – it’s no fault of the book!

I adored Intisar Khanani’s Thorn, a whip-smart retelling of ‘The Goose Girl’ (see my review here!) and this bonus novelette is a perfect addition that gives you a glimpse into the main character’s history.
You ever just read a book so perfect for you that it’s like the author wrote it on spec to your preferences? Yeah, this book is EXACTLY what I’m looking for in a YA fantasy.
I first read Thorn in 2018, as a self-published novel, and I loved its smart, wry, thought-provoking take on one of my favourite fairy tales, The Goose Girl. When I heard it was being reworked for traditional publishing, I was thrilled, and I’m so happy to be able to tell you it’s even better in this form!
I was so lucky to win a copy of this amazing book from Duckworth Books, as I’m a big fan of Eleanor Herman’s writing, and I love learning about the history of early medicine and cosmetics – especially when they’re actually poisonous!
I know, I know, we’re barely into November and I’m already mentioning the dreaded ‘Christmas’! I’m not the sort of person to start Christmas immediately after Halloween (I love autumn too much), but I couldn’t resist the sound of this cute Christmas book when I got the invite to the blog tour!
